CAR WASH Pulse™ Q4 2026: Operators Grow Cautious as Suppliers Regain Footing

Admin |

New industry data also finds pay-per-wash customers more loyal, and more easily lost, than operators may assume.

WHEATON, Ill., Oct. 28, 2026 — The International Carwash Association (ICA) has released the Q4 2026 edition of CAR WASH Pulse™, its quarterly industry intelligence report analyzing consumer behavior and industry sentiment across retailers and suppliers. This quarter's report finds car wash operators heading into 2027 more cautious about the months ahead, while suppliers report a turnaround in their business.

Retailer and supplier sentiment moved in opposite directions this quarter.

Just 42% of retailers expect positive business conditions six months from now, down from 54% last quarter. That puts their outlook level with their view of current conditions for the first time this year. Suppliers moved the other way: 60% rate current conditions positively, up from 42% last quarter. Both groups now name the broader economy as their top concern.

The underlying business is holding. Memberships are still growing for most operators. The pressure is on the pay-per-wash side, and this quarter's In Focus analysis finds those transactional customers more loyal, and more fragile, than operators may assume.

Q4 Highlights: Cautious Operators, Rebounding Suppliers and Fragile Pay-Per-Wash Loyalty

  • Retailer outlook slips for a second straight quarter. 42% expect positive conditions six months out, down from 54%. Operators name the overall economy as their top challenge, followed by fuel and input costs, market saturation and competition.
  • Suppliers regain footing. 60% rate current conditions positively, up from 42% last quarter. More raised prices, fewer report shrinking profits, and their top worry has shifted from input costs to the broader economy.
  • Members set a higher bar than the math requires. 70% say they need to wash at least three times a month to justify a membership, well above the roughly 2.2 washes on average it takes to break even. Members who fall short of their own bar are the ones most at risk of canceling.
  • Pay-per-wash customers are more loyal than they look. 60% have a preferred car wash, and many bring value beyond the wash itself through referrals, upgrades and extra vehicles.
  • But that loyalty is easily lost. It can take only a few mild disappointments to send them elsewhere. The full report breaks down what keeps these customers coming back and what drives them away.

"There's a tendency to think of the pay-per-wash customer as the one who got away," said James Risley, research manager at the International Carwash Association. "Our data says otherwise. Most of them have a wash they prefer, and they spend and refer like loyal customers. But that loyalty is easier to lose, and in a tighter economy that matters."

These findings arrive as the broader economy shifts. The average U.S. vehicle is now a record 12.8 years old, and The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index fell to 81.9 in September. Against that backdrop, CAR WASH Pulse™ Q4 2026 points operators toward the customers they already have: making memberships feel worth the price, and giving pay-per-wash customers a reason to keep coming back.
