CAR WASH Pulse™ Q3 2026: Consumers Want Personalized Rewards — Most Operators Aren't Delivering Them Yet

New industry data shows loyalty and personalization are the biggest technology-driven growth lever in car washing, but reliability and the human touch remain just as critical to keeping customers.

WHEATON, Ill., Aug. 10, 2026 — The International Carwash Association (ICA) has released the Q3 2026 edition of CAR WASH Pulse™, its quarterly industry intelligence report analyzing consumer behavior and industry sentiment across retailers and suppliers. This quarter's in-focus analysis of technology and AI finds a clear gap between what consumers want from car wash technology and what operators have built so far, with loyalty and personalized offers emerging as the industry's most underused growth lever.

A personalization gap emerged as the standout finding this quarter.

Personalized offers and rewards are the single strongest technology-related reason consumers say they would switch car washes — more than any app feature, payment upgrade or entry technology. Yet only 54% of retailers currently run a digital loyalty platform, and just 31% use AI to personalize offers. Demand for loyalty and recognition is running well ahead of operator investment.

The findings also show technology cannot substitute for reliability or people. Nearly half of consumers say confusing or broken app, payment or entry technology makes them less likely to return, and retailers still say on-site employees, not apps or digital channels, are their most effective way to sign up new subscription members. Mobile apps, meanwhile, function as a retention tool for existing members rather than a way to win new customers: never-members are largely unmoved by app features and many are actively app-averse.

Q3 Highlights: The Personalization Gap, Reliability and the Human Touch

Personalized offers are the #1 tech-driven switch trigger. 29% of consumers overall (and 36% of current members) say personalized offers and rewards would most likely convince them to switch car washes, outperforming every other technology upgrade tested.

Investment lags demand. Only 54% of retailers run a digital loyalty platform and just 31% use AI to personalize offers, even as loyalty rewards and discounts are the two most-wanted app features among consumers.

• Reliability beats novelty. Nearly half of consumers (48%) say confusing or broken app, payment or entry technology makes them less likely to return to a car wash, rising to 53% among former and never-members.

• People still close the deal. 56% of retailers say an on-site employee is their single most effective channel for signing up new members, and consumers most want staff on hand when technology fails.

• Apps retain members, but rarely recruit them. Only 16% of never-members say an app would move them to switch, and 31% are actively app-averse, while current members are far more app-engaged and app-motivated.

“The industry has digitized the transaction faster than it has digitized the relationship,” said James Risley, research manager at the International Carwash Association. “Consumers are telling us exactly what they want: to feel recognized and rewarded. Right now, investment in loyalty and personalization is running behind that demand. That's the clearest, lowest-risk growth opportunity in this quarter's data.”

These findings arrive as retailers and suppliers navigate a more cost-conscious operating environment, with rising input costs and margin pressure shaping investment priorities across the industry. Against that backdrop, CAR WASH Pulse™ Q3 2026 points operators toward technology choices that improve loyalty and reduce friction, rather than novelty for its own sake, as the more efficient way to protect and grow the customer base.
