New ICA data shows consumers remain willing to pay for professional car washes, while operators face slower membership growth and intensifying competition heading into 2026.
As the car wash industry moves into 2026, demand remains steady—but the environment around it is evolving. According to the CAR WASH Pulse™ Q1 2026 report from the International Carwash Association (ICA), operators are navigating a market shaped by greater price sensitivity, slower membership growth, and intensifying competition, even as consumer usage holds firm.
In Episode 3 of Car Wash Exchange, Eric Wulf and Bob Klein offer a quick promo of what readers will discover.
The latest quarterly data reinforces the resilience of professional car washing. Despite ongoing economic uncertainty, consumers continue to prioritize car care services, underscoring the industry’s durability. At the same time, customers are more deliberate, weighing prices more carefully against perceived value.
“Pricing power exists in the market, but it’s tied directly to perceived value,” said James Risley, research manager at the International Carwash Association. “When operators deliver consistent quality and a strong experience, resistance to price increases softens. The challenge is maintaining that value equation in an increasingly competitive environment.”
Pricing Power Exists—When Value Is Clear
One of the strongest signals from Q1 data centers is pricing flexibility. Nearly 79% of car wash customers say they would be willing to accept a price increase. That finding may surprise operators who feel constrained by competitive pressure, but it comes with an important caveat: willingness to pay is closely tied to wash quality, consistency, and overall experience.
Consumers are not simply price‑driven—they are value‑driven. Operators who clearly deliver superior results and a smooth customer experience may have more pricing power than they assume.
Membership Growth Slows but Remains Essential
Membership programs continue to serve as the backbone of demand. Nearly 90% of unlimited wash members say they plan to renew their subscriptions, highlighting the model's strength and stickiness. While retailers continue to grow their membership bases, the pace has moderated compared with earlier years, signaling a more mature phase of subscription adoption.
Competition and Saturation Take Center Stage
Retailer sentiment improved slightly early in the year, with operators reporting a clearer view of current conditions than in late 2025. Even so, market saturation has emerged as the industry’s top concern for 2026. Increasing site density and competitive pressure now outweigh worries about input costs or broader economic conditions.
The takeaway from CAR WASH Pulse™ Q1 2026 is clear: the industry remains fundamentally strong, but success will depend on differentiation. In a crowded market, operators who focus on quality, consistency, and customer experience will be best positioned to stand out.
